With just three floors and 27 rooms, you can avoid the tourist crunch and overbearing salespeople that are all too common at large resorts. Thompson Beach House, built in 2016, is a chic little Bohemian getaway and an extension of Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel, located a couple blocks away. You could almost throw a stone into the water from the balcony of your ocean-view room—it’s that close. Private daybeds, cabanas and an oceanfront lounge are exclusively for Beach House guests. Bicycles, yoga, paddleboards and other water sports are also available on site. C Grill and Lounge is an excellent alfresco restaurant serving up wood-fire grilled seafood plus Mexican bites and ceviche, all made with local ingredients.

The room itself really felt huge, especially considering I was staying alone. With a second bed, it could have easily accommodated two couples. Somehow, Thompson had "lost" my Hotels.com reservation — they kept insisting that I had canceled my stay, since the only booking they could find was the one I had made directly (and later canceled).

There are several loungers around it as well as a few cabanas with ceiling fans, sofas, and food and drink service. There is some music during the day but it’s generally not too loud. For my entree, I was eyeing the whole catch of the day, which was described as "golden fish" with a pastor marinade. At $50, that was out of my solo-diner budget, though, so the waiter offered to do a filet prepared in the same style, instead. At $17, it wasn't cheap, considering the prices at local restaurants, but, boy, was it delicious.
Ferries to Cozumel dock at Muelle Playa del Carmen, which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Xcaret, a famous theme and natural park, can be found about a 15-minute drive away. The beautiful Tulum ruins are about an hour away by car, as is the nearest international airport, in Cancun. I also ventured over to the Main House to check out the sprawling rooftop pool, which was very quiet soon after sunrise. With just 27 rooms and suites, the Beach House was definitely on the quieter side — well, aside from the loud music. While guests staying here could use the Main House facilities, that wasn't a reciprocal perk.

Please inform Thompson Playa Del Carmen Beach House, by Hyatt of your expected arrival time in advance. Very modern, clean, peaceful, in front of the beach, in downtown near everything. We loved the spacious room, terrace, and calm of the space. It is far enough away from the very clubby section a few blocks away, and insulated from that noise.
There are definitely better options in Playa del Carmen to spend your hard-earned cash -- and points. Plus, since the Beach House won't be joining World of Hyatt after all, I can't see myself returning to this property. As for that annoying $35 daily lifestyle fee, I tried to maximize it as best I could. The tequila tasting really felt like an afterthought — it ended up being fun and informative, but the bartender was just kinda winging it, and didn't have anything set up before I appeared.
